About this coinHistory

The 1843-O Seated Liberty Quarter is the largest New Orleans quarter delivery of the early series, with a reported mintage of 968,000 pieces. The figure runs comfortably above any preceding O-mint quarter year and reflects a year in which New Orleans operated near the top of its early production capacity for the denomination. The coin carries the Drapery obverse hub that had been standard since mid-1840 and the same heraldic-eagle reverse used across the series at this point, with the O mintmark on the reverse below the eagle. Specialist references catalog several die marriages for the year, including occasional repunched-mintmark variants that surface in dealer hold inventories but rarely receive attribution at the certified-grade level outside specialist channels.

Strike on the issue is uneven, the typical pattern for New Orleans silver in this era. Liberty's head and the cap above it routinely come up soft, the inner shield lines occasionally wash out on the lower right, and the eagle's claws and lower leg feathers are usually the first detail to weaken on a tired die. Surfaces tend toward satin luster on the rare Mint State survivors, with some examples showing the prooflike reflectivity that occasionally appears on early O-mint silver from fresh die states. The drapery diagnostic at Liberty's elbow confirms the obverse subtype. Counterfeit risk is moderate at higher grades; weight should fall near 6.68 g per the Mint Act of January 18, 1837 standard, and certification through PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, is the working baseline for any purchase above Extremely Fine. Survival concentrates in the Good through Very Fine band; Mint State coins are uncommon but more available than for any other 1840-1844 New Orleans date, with PCGS and NGC populations readable through MS62 before thinning sharply above MS63.

The Regular classification matches how the issue trades. Date-set builders working the 1840-1844 New Orleans run treat the 1843-O as the most accessible slot in the group, and circulated examples in problem-free Very Fine or Extremely Fine clear specialist inventories without much delay. Mid-grade Mint State coins surface through major auction houses with enough regularity that patient buyers can find acceptable choices without aggressive overbidding. Original gray patina, a sharp date and mintmark, and clean reverse detail around the eagle's claws matter more than chasing the highest numeric grade.
