The issue arrived at the moment the silver-export crisis was beginning to dominate Mint planning. California gold had been flowing east in commercial volume for two full years by 1850, and the resulting shift in the silver-to-gold ratio pushed the bullion value of two new quarters above face by a margin large enough to make melting profitable. Bullion brokers, the traders who profit by exchanging metal for coin and back, were already buying federal silver at face value and shipping it abroad. The Philadelphia Mint's response was to slow production and conserve bullion, which is the proximate reason this date and its 1851 and 1852 successors all ran well below the figures of the mid-1840s.

What collectors check on the date is the standard pre-Arrows checklist with extra attention to authentication. The drapery at Liberty's elbow must be cleanly defined; its absence indicates either heavy wear or a misattributed coin. Strikes are typical for late-1840s Philadelphia, with central head detail and stars usually sharp on a properly graded piece and occasional softness on the eagle's right leg and lower shield rivets. Authentication starts with weight. A genuine 1850 should fall within roughly 6.60 to 6.74 grams; anything close to 6.22 grams indicates a post-1853 planchet. Because the date carries a noticeable premium over generic Seated quarter type prices, cleaning and re-engraved-date alteration are both concerns that PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, screen for in their certification process.

For a date-set builder, the 1850 is meaningfully scarcer than the 1845 through 1847 group but more available than the 1848 P and 1851 P that bracket it. Good through Very Fine examples surface regularly and trade at modest premiums; Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated coins move quickly when offered with original surfaces; Mint State pieces are a genuine condition rarity. The PCGS and NGC certified populations skew sharply to circulated grades, consistent with the heavy silver-export melting that thinned out pre-Arrows survivors through the early 1850s.
