About this coinHistory

The 1852-O Seated Liberty Quarter records a New Orleans delivery of 96,000 pieces, the second-lowest New Orleans quarter mintage of the early 1850s and a legitimate Semi-Key in the branch run. Combined with the 88,000 produced in 1851-O, these two issues mark the floor of New Orleans quarter output for the pre-Arrows era and demonstrate how sharply the silver-export crisis was squeezing branch-mint production by the final two years of the original 6.68-gram standard. The Coinage Act of February 21, 1853 was only months away when this coin was struck, and the legislative fix that reduced the quarter weight to 6.22 grams and added the diagnostic arrows at the date was already in active discussion in Congress. The 1852-O is the last New Orleans quarter struck on the original Mint Act of 1837 weight before that change.

Strike characteristics on the 1852-O follow the documented New Orleans pattern of the period: softness through Liberty's hair behind the ear, weakness on central shield rivets, and recurring lightness on the eagle's leg and claw detail. These are striking artifacts from lower press tonnage at the branch and dies kept in service longer than ideal, and grading the date correctly requires reading these as production traits rather than as wear. The mintmark sits on the reverse below the eagle in the standard pre-1892 branch position. Larry Briggs, whose Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Quarters is the standard die-marriage reference for the series, catalogs the issue without major separately-priced varieties, though the limited mintage concentrates surviving examples among a small number of die marriages. Authentication starts with weight on a genuine pre-Arrows piece, which should fall within roughly 6.60 to 6.74 grams. The price gap over a generic Seated quarter makes added-mintmark counterfeits a real risk, with engraving an O onto a common 1852 P the documented alteration pattern. A PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, slab is the practical safeguard for any coin priced at Semi-Key levels.

For a date-and-mintmark set, the 1852-O sits alongside the 1851-O as one of the tougher New Orleans pre-Arrows entries to fill in clean condition. PCGS and NGC certified populations skew heavily to circulated grades, consistent with the heavy commercial use of branch-mint silver in the Gulf trade and the export pressure that thinned out unworn survivors before they could be saved. Good through Very Fine examples surface with patience; Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated coins move quickly when offered with clean surfaces; Mint State pieces are decidedly scarce and condition-rare above MS62. The practical acquisition path is to secure a problem-free certified Fine or Very Fine, accept the Semi-Key premium that comes with the population, and treat any opportunity at Extremely Fine or better as an upgrade. For the broader story of Gobrecht's design and the series' production arc, see the Seated Liberty Quarter series history.
