About this coinHistory

The 1859-S Seated Liberty Quarter is a low-mintage San Francisco delivery from the sixth year of branch operation, with 80,000 pieces struck on the 6.22-gram post-1853 standard. The figure sits within the 56,000 to 121,000 band that defined San Francisco quarter output through the late 1850s and early 1860s, and reads as one of the smaller deliveries of that group. San Francisco silver coinage in this period worked the presses around the facility's primary task of refining and striking California gold, and the silver quarter line operated as bullion supply allowed rather than on a steady schedule. The issue belongs to the No Arrows, No Motto subtype that ran from 1856 through 1865 and carries no special design marker for the year. What separates it from comparable Philadelphia coinage is geography and circulation pressure; West Coast commerce kept these coins moving hard through the 1860s and 1870s, and original-skin survivors are notably thin in higher grades.

Strike on the date follows the familiar San Francisco pattern of the period. Liberty's head, the upper shield lines, and the eagle's right (viewer's left) leg feathers all soften early under die wear, while obverse stars and date usually render adequately on fresh dies. Graders separate this die-related weakness from honest circulation by checking whether the surrounding fields retain any cartwheel luster, the rotating sheen of original mint surface that survives only on unworn coins. Authentication centers on the S mintmark below the eagle, which should sit cleanly inside original mint surface and show no tooling halo or color mismatch suggesting transplantation from a Philadelphia piece to fake branch-mint scarcity. Weight on a genuine planchet falls within tolerance of 6.22 grams; modern struck counterfeits sometimes miss the figure or show mushy claw detail under loupe inspection. Briggs catalogs the working die marriages for the year, and reverse die cracks plus mintmark placement carry the attribution weight; date position relative to the lowest curl and rock supplies the obverse pairing diagnostic.

For a date-set builder, the 1859-S is a Semi-Key that surfaces in circulated grades through Very Fine at meaningful premiums and climbs sharply through Extremely Fine and above. Mint State pieces are condition rare, with original-skin examples above MS62 firmly in specialist territory. Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company encapsulation is the standard for any coin above About Uncirculated, since cleaning and altered surfaces are common defects on West Coast survivors. For the broader story of Gobrecht's design and the series' Civil War-era production, see the Seated Liberty Quarter series history.
