About this coinHistory

The 1868 Proof is the third With Motto delivery of the Seated quarter Proof program, with mintage recorded at approximately 600 pieces. The figure falls inside the steady production band the Mint maintained from 1867 through 1872, when Proof subscriptions settled at roughly 600 quarters per year. Circulation production at Philadelphia for 1868 stayed low at 30,000 quarters, another of the small late-1860s circulation runs that mark the post-Civil War recovery years for the Seated series. The combination of a thin circulation figure and a modest Proof delivery keeps the entire 1868 date scarce across both strike types and draws cross-collector interest from date set builders working either the Proof or business strike track. The figure shown on the catalog page reflects circulation output for the year; the actual Proof figure is around 600 pieces.

Strike and authentication diagnostics follow the established With Motto pattern. Brilliant Proof striking on 1868 dies shows fully mirrored fields, sharp denticles around the entire circumference, and squared rims, with Liberty's head and the eagle's leg feathers at full strike depth. The reverse should show "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the banner above the eagle in sharp raised letters, and weight should fall near 6.22 grams under the Coinage Act of February 21, 1853 standard. Cameo contrast, the frosted-devices-against-mirrored-fields appearance designated CAM by PCGS and NGC, appears with reasonable regularity on the 1868 delivery and reads as a premium attribute when awarded. Deep Cameo from the year is scarce and consistently brings a strong multiple over a CAM example at the same numerical grade. Hairlines from old cleaning remain the most common surface defect and the leading reason for grade compression at the top end.

Market position is steady. With Motto type-set builders working a Seated quarter Proof slot, Seated quarter Proof date set collectors, and post-Civil War silver Proof specialists draw on the same supply pool. Attractive PR64 to PR66 examples trade at predictable auction levels, with original cabinet toning consistently outperforming rebrightened surfaces in head-to-head comparison. Cameo examples step up a tier in price, and Deep Cameo from the year is a stand-alone purchase rather than a price-list trade. Certification through a major grading service is the working baseline. The low circulation production for the year layers business strike collector demand on top of the Proof specialist pool, keeping the entire 1868 date firmly on the radar of Seated quarter buyers.
