The 1870-CC is the first quarter struck at the Carson City Mint, which opened in February 1870 to convert Comstock Lode silver into coin without shipping bullion across the Sierras to San Francisco. The reported mintage of 8,340 is the smallest among the four Carson City Seated Liberty Quarter dates, and the issue carries the additional weight of first-year-of-mint status that collectors prize across every CC series. Christian Gobrecht's seated obverse and the William Kneass / James Longacre heraldic eagle reverse were already three decades old by 1870, but the new CC mintmark below the eagle made these pieces feel like a fresh chapter rather than a holdover. The coin entered commerce locally, in a frontier silver economy where the freshly minted quarters circulated hard from the day they left the press.

Survival is brutal. Population reports across PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, together account for only a few dozen confirmed examples in any grade, and most are well below Very Fine. Mint State pieces are extreme rarities, typically appearing only at auction when major Seated quarter collections cross the block. Authentication is not optional: counterfeit and altered CC mintmarks turn up regularly on lower-grade Philadelphia 1870 coins, and the diagnostic die markers on the genuine reverse, including specific positions of the mintmark relative to the eagle's tail feathers, separate real from fake. Buy this issue in a PCGS or NGC holder, never raw, and treat any uncertified offering as suspect until proven otherwise.

The 1870-CC sits in the apex tier of Seated Liberty Quarter Key Dates alongside the 1873-CC No Arrows, with auction prices that comfortably run into five figures for honest circulated examples and into six figures at the high end of the Mint State pyramid.
