About this coinHistory

The 1872 Proof closes the With Motto subtype as struck on the 6.22-gram standard, the last Seated quarter Proof year before the Coinage Act of February 12, 1873 reshaped both the weight standard and the design with the addition of arrows at the date. Proof mintage for 1872 is recorded at approximately 950 pieces, the highest figure of the late-1860s through early-1870s window and a reflection of stable subscription demand heading into the transition year. Circulation production at Philadelphia for 1872 reached 182,950 quarters. The Carson City Mint struck its third-year 1872-CC at a 22,850-piece circulation figure that became a Key Date for the series, but Carson City did not produce Proofs. The figure shown on the catalog page reflects circulation output for the year; the actual Proof figure is around 950 pieces.

Strike and authentication diagnostics follow the established With Motto pattern. Brilliant Proof striking on 1872 dies shows fully mirrored fields, sharp denticles around the entire circumference, and squared rims, with Liberty's head and the eagle's leg feathers at full strike depth. The reverse should show "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the banner above the eagle in sharp raised letters, and weight should fall near 6.22 grams under the Coinage Act of February 21, 1853 standard. The date area shows no arrows, since the 1872 production preceded the February 1873 weight change. The Philadelphia Proof carries no mintmark. Cameo contrast, the frosted-devices-against-mirrored-fields appearance designated CAM by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, appears with reasonable regularity on the 1872 delivery, and Deep Cameo from the year is scarce. Hairlines from old cleaning remain the most common surface defect.

Market position is steady, with the closing-year-of-weight-standard context drawing modest end-of-subtype interest from collectors building chronological design holdings. With Motto type-set builders, Seated quarter Proof date set collectors, and pre-Crime-of-73 silver Proof specialists share the supply pool. Attractive PR64 to PR66 examples trade at predictable auction levels, with original cabinet toning consistently outperforming brightened surfaces in head-to-head bidding. Cameo examples step up a tier in price, and Deep Cameo from the year is a stand-alone purchase rather than a price-list trade. Certification through a major grading service is the working baseline. The Carson City 1872-CC Key Date layers cross-collector demand from Seated quarter generalists pairing the Carson piece with the matching Philadelphia Proof. For the broader story of Gobrecht's design and the series' proof program, see the Seated Liberty Quarter series history.
