About this coinHistory

Production of the 1875 Seated Liberty Quarter Proof returns the design to its standard With Motto form after two years of Arrows flanking the date. The Coinage Act of February 12, 1873 had set the new authorized weight at 6.25 grams, the arrows were added to mark the change through 1874, and 1875 begins the final stretch of the series that runs through 1891 without the Arrows device. Proof delivery for the year sat near seven hundred pieces, in line with annual Proof Seated quarter production through the late 1870s before the formal subscription program matured into the four-figure deliveries of the late 1880s. The site mintage column carries the circulation production of more than four million pieces rather than the Proof figure; the actual Proof estimate stands at roughly seven hundred.

Authentication and strike diagnostics on an 1875 Proof start with the date area. No arrows should appear flanking the date; their presence on a coin claimed as 1875 indicates either a misidentified 1874 Arrows piece or a problem coin. Brilliant Proof striking shows deeply mirrored fields, sharply squared rims, full denticles around both sides, and complete strike depth on the eagle's shield lines and leg feathers. Cameo contrast, the strong visual difference between frosted devices and reflective fields, earns a CAM designation from PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company; heavier frost coverage earns Deep Cameo, written DCAM. Weight should fall near 6.25 grams under the 1873 standard. Counterfeit risk on Seated Proof issues stays low because the die-preparation and finishing process is genuinely difficult to reproduce, and a current major slab carries most of the authentication burden.

Market position is shaped by the steady but limited supply. Combined PCGS and NGC populations across all certified Proof grades sit in the low hundreds, with CAM and DCAM survivors concentrated in the upper grade band. The buyer base draws from Seated quarter Proof set collectors, With Motto type collectors completing a Proof example, and date-run builders working the 1875 to 1891 stretch. Original mirrored surfaces with light cabinet toning carry a clear premium over rebrightened pieces, since the mirrored fields read more cleanly under undisturbed patina. Certification through a major grading service is the working baseline for any acquisition.
