About this coinHistory

The 1877-S S/S Horizontal S is the recognized mintmark variety of the year, created when a working reverse die received its S mintmark punch sideways on the first impression and was then re-punched correctly upright. The horizontal first impression remains partially visible under magnification, with the upper and lower curves of the lying-down S clearly readable beneath and around the corrected upright S. Variety specialists treat the die as a working San Francisco reverse pulled before the horizontal-orientation error was caught at the press, with the corrected re-punch made on the die rather than on individual coins; both PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, attribute the variety on their slabs, and the 1877-S total mintage of 8,996,000 includes an unknown but small share of pieces from this specific die marriage. The variety carries the post-Arrows With Motto design: the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the banner above the eagle, no arrows at the date, and the 6.25-gram weight standard from the Coinage Act of February 12, 1873.

The authentication diagnostic is direct. Examine the S mintmark under 5x to 10x magnification: the secondary impression should read as a horizontal S, with curves emerging at the top and bottom of the corrected upright punch, not as a die scratch or a contact mark. Light tilting under angled illumination helps separate genuine doubled-punch geometry from post-strike damage. The variety can be cherry-picked from raw 1877-S inventory by patient buyers who know the marker, and certified examples carry the explicit variety designation on the holder. Strike quality and surface preservation match the standard 1877-S production for the year; the variety attribution is the entire premium driver. A genuine planchet falls within tolerance of 6.25 grams.

Population data on the variety is meaningfully smaller than the standard 1877-S, since most 1877-S coins are slabbed without attention to the variety attribution and a real share of survivors sits unrecognized in older or non-attributed holders. The certified variety trades at a substantial premium over the standard die-pair 1877-S, and the gap widens through About Uncirculated and into Mint State because so few attributed examples exist in higher grades. For a Seated quarter specialist working a variety set, the 1877-S S/S Horizontal S is the headline non-overdate variety of the late 1870s and a recommended certified buy. For the broader story of Gobrecht's design and the series' late-1870s production, see the Seated Liberty Quarter series history.
