About this coinHistory

The 1880 quarter records a Philadelphia delivery of 14,955 pieces, a figure essentially indistinguishable from the 14,700 struck in 1879 and consistent with the low-output stretch that defined the parent mint through the rest of the series. Carson City had ended quarter production after 1878, San Francisco struck no quarters at all from 1879 through 1887, and the volume of subsidiary silver already in eastern bank reserves left ordinary commerce well supplied without further coinage. What the 1880 mintage actually represented was a token Philadelphia run sufficient to satisfy collector orders, year-set assemblers, and bullion accounts rather than any street-level demand. The coin belongs to the final With Motto, No Arrows subtype that ran from 1875 through 1891, struck on the 6.25 gram weight standard set by the Coinage Act of February 12, 1873.

Strike quality is generally sharp on this issue, with full radial detail on the eagle's shield and clear separation of the IN GOD WE TRUST banner letters above. Because so much of the production went straight into collector channels rather than into pocket commerce, survivors today skew heavily toward About Uncirculated and Mint State, and an unworn 1880 is easier to locate than the absolute mintage figure might suggest. The diagnostic concern is date alteration rather than die-state weakness; counterfeiters have at times shaved or added digits to fabricate scarcer 1879 or 1881 pieces from related dates, so the loops of the 0 and the angular foot of the 1 should look natural under modest magnification. Weight on a genuine planchet falls within tolerance of 6.25 grams, and the standard PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC slab clears these concerns at a glance for any buyer working above a budget-grade level.

The 1880 carries a Semi-Key Date designation on the site, sitting alongside the 1879 and 1881 in that tier while the very similar 1882, 1883, 1884, 1885, and 1886 are catalogued as Regular issues. The actual scarcity profile of the late Philadelphia run reads as a continuum rather than a tiered set, and registry-set demand has compressed available choice Mint State supply across all of the late dates rather than concentrating only on the badged Semi-Keys. Prices have appreciated steadily in MS64 and finer over the past decade.
