San Francisco struck 6,380,000 Standing Liberty Quarters in 1920, a meaningful jump from the previous year's low output as Pacific Coast commerce expanded and California's population continued its rapid postwar growth. The 1920-S circulated through a region transformed by oil discoveries in Los Angeles, the early film industry in Hollywood, and the agricultural boom in the Central Valley. Quarters from this date saw heavy use through the 1920s and into the Depression, and modern survivors typically show the wear consistent with thirty or more years of active circulation. San Francisco quarter production during this period continued to display characteristically soft central strikes, particularly affecting Liberty's head, the shield rivets, and the eagle's breast feathers on the reverse, with strike quality varying substantially across the year.
The Type 2 design carries Liberty striding through the gateway with chain mail across her torso, the date 1920 below, and the S mintmark positioned above and to the left of the date on the obverse. The "M" monogram of Hermon Atkins MacNeil sits at the base of the shield to the right of the date. Composition follows the series standard at 90% silver and 10% copper, weight 6.25 grams, diameter 24.3 mm, edge reeded. Authentication of the 1920-S concentrates on the mintmark's position, font, and consistent depth, since the date's modest premium has motivated occasional alteration attempts from Philadelphia coins. The S mintmark should show proper serifs without signs of tooling around its perimeter. Many Mint State 1920-S pieces lack Full Head detail because of weak central strike rather than wear, and this distinction matters for grading and value.
PCGS and NGC populations rank the 1920-S as moderately available through About Uncirculated but increasingly scarce above MS-63, with Full Head examples genuinely rare. Heritage Auctions has recorded strong results for premium pieces. Read the full Standing Liberty Quarter series history.
