1875 Proof

The 1875 proof twenty-cent piece carries a distinction nothing else in the four-year run can claim. It is the first-year proof for a denomination that lasted only from 1875 through 1878, and the 2,790 proofs Philadelphia sold represent the debut of William Barber's design in that format. A proof is a coin struck with specially polished dies on polished planchets for collectors, not for circulation. The mintage is conspicuous in context. The 1875 proof dime, quarter, half dollar, and trade dollar each ran around 700 pieces. The twenty-cent proof exceeded those companion silver issues by roughly four-to-one, reflecting collector curiosity over a new denomination rather than sustained demand for it.

The 22 mm diameter works in the collector's favor on proof examples. Strike quality is generally sharp, and the polished dies render Liberty's drapery and the eagle's feathers crisply under glass. Surface preservation is the harder question. Most certified survivors land in the PR62 to PR64 range, and the prevailing impairment is hairlines from old wipes. The fields are deeply mirrored, and any cleaning shows immediately under a tilted light. Cameo (strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices) appears on roughly a quarter of certified examples per PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) census data. Deep Cameo or DCAM (the highest level of frost-to-mirror contrast) is genuinely scarce, and the 2,790 figure understates how few attractive coins actually exist.

Within the four-year proof run, the 1875 is the most available date by raw mintage but trails the 1876 in gem survivors and outpaces the rarer 1877. A collector chasing the complete 1875 to 1878 proof set faces a manageable target of four coins, with the 1877 as the genuine barrier. Certified PR64 to PR65 1875 proofs without Cameo trade at accessible levels for a 19th-century proof; Cameo and DCAM premiums climb sharply at PR66 and above. Raw examples should be evaluated carefully for original surfaces before purchase, since the small diameter makes hairlines easy to miss in poor lighting.
