1876-CC

The 1876-CC is the apex rarity of the twenty-cent series and one of the celebrated keys of 19th-century United States silver coinage. Carson City struck 10,000 pieces in 1876, but the denomination had already failed in commerce. In May 1877 Mint Director Henry Linderman authorized the destruction of the twenty-cent inventory held at Carson City, and roughly 12,359 coins went into the melting pot, a total that included the bulk of the 1876-CC mintage along with unissued 1875-CC stock, before any reached circulation. Fewer than two dozen examples are known to survive today, all of them in Mint State because the coins never circulated, consistent with employee or visitor souvenirs rather than commercial release. The story of the issue is therefore not the mintage figure of 10,000 but the survivor count, which places this coin in a tier occupied by only a handful of other federal silver rarities.

With so few examples extant, every 1876-CC carries a tracked pedigree, and serious buyers reconstruct the chain back through 20th-century cabinets before committing. Authentication is paramount because the standard fraud pathway is the alteration of a common 1875-CC into an 1876-CC by reworking the final date digit, and a coin with disturbed metal in the date area or an unnatural digit profile should be rejected outright. The genuine issue shows a pronounced doubled die obverse, cataloged as FS-101 in the Fivaz-Stanton Cherrypickers' Guide, visible most clearly in the word LIBERTY across the shield, and that doubling is a positive marker any altered piece will lack. The coin must also weigh 5.00 grams and carry a plain, smooth edge, a useful check against any quarter-derived alteration since United States quarters of the period carry a reeded edge. The CC mintmark itself has a distinctive shape and placement on the reverse, and Walter Breen's encyclopedia and Q. Collecting the 1876-CC means competing at the very top of the United States market. Public auction appearances are infrequent, often years apart, and recent realizations have run into the high six figures, with a finest-known coin crossing the block at $870,000 at Heritage in August 2022. Lesser grades still command six-figure entry, and even impaired examples find committed buyers given how rarely the date surfaces. Twenty-cent specialists who pursue this coin do so understanding it is the capstone purchase of the set, not a piece accumulated in routine collecting.
