The 2010-P Hot Springs Satin Finish quarter is the Philadelphia striking included in the 2010 Uncirculated Coin Set, the last year the U.S. Mint produced its Satin Finish program. From 2005 through 2010, every coin distributed in the annual Mint Set received a Satin Finish: a uniformly textured, lightly matte surface produced by specially prepared, bead-blasted dies. Hot Springs was the first design in the new America's Beautiful National Parks series, and its inclusion in the 2010 Mint Set placed it at the convergence of two production stories, the opening of the 56-design ATB run and the final chapter of the six-year Satin Finish era. The 583,897 mintage figure matches the 2010 Mint Set sales total exactly, since each set contained one Philadelphia and one Denver striking of all five 2010 ATB designs.
Identifying a genuine Satin Finish example comes down to surface texture. Under direct light, the issue shows a uniformly fine matte sheen across both fields and devices, with no cartwheel luster (the rotating bright pattern visible on standard Mint State quarters) and no mirrored reflectivity (the hallmark of traditional proof striking). This unusual surface, neither business strike nor proof, has its own visual signature. PCGS (the Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC both label slabbed examples explicitly as Satin Finish or SP (Specimen), which gives buyers a clean confirmation of finish type. Many collectors still encounter the issue inside its original Mint Set packaging, the most common acquisition route. Cardboard 2x2 holders containing pulled-out raw examples also circulate in the secondary market and are routine for the design.
As a collecting target, the issue is a Regular-classification entry, common in its niche because the Mint produced almost 600,000 of each design pair, but distinct in finish from every other 2010 quarter at the same mint. Series builders pursuing a complete ATB collection that distinguishes Satin Finish from standard business strike treat the 2010 P and D Satin pieces as a separate sub-category. Slabbed examples in SP69 and SP70 are widely available and trade at modest premiums over the raw Mint-Set price. For the broader story of the ATB program and the 2005-2010 Satin Finish era, see the Washington ATB series history.
