About this coinHistory

The 2010-S Hot Springs Proof opens the San Francisco proof run of the America's Beautiful National Parks program, the second federal commemorative quarter series in a row to receive S-mint proof treatment after the 1999-2008 State Quarters and 2009 Territories runs. Don Everhart's reverse depicts the Hot Springs National Park headquarters with thermal water cascading in the foreground, the same composition struck for the P and D circulation issues but rendered with mirrored fields and frosted devices on these proof dies. The Mint reported 1,397,219 clad proof sets sold for 2010, the figure that anchors the print run on every one of the year's five proof issues. Production took place at San Francisco using polished planchets and specially prepared dies struck twice for the deep relief that defines modern proof work.

Authentication on the issue starts with the S mintmark above Washington's head and the contrast between the mirrored field and the frosted device on the reverse. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC assign two cameo grades that govern most of the market value: Cameo (CAM), where the mirror-to-frost contrast is strong but not absolute, and Deep Cameo (DCAM), where the frost is heavy and dense and the field mirror is full. Most 2010-S clad proofs grade out as Deep Cameo because the dies were fresh at the front of the run, so a DCAM designation is the expected outcome rather than a premium-tier rarity. Look at the headquarters portico detail and the texture in the cascading water for strike grading. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm) matches the circulation issue and rules out counterfeit risk on the modern alloy.

As a collecting target, this is a Regular-classification issue widely supplied in PR69-DCAM and steadily available in PR70-DCAM through both major services. The premium tier is at PR70-DCAM, where population reports run well into the thousands across both grading houses, so buyers paying full PR70 money should expect to be able to find the date without trouble. Most series builders pick the issue up loose from broken 2010 Proof Sets or in PR69-DCAM slabs and reserve real money for PR70.
