About this coinHistory

The 2011-S Gettysburg Proof opens the second year of San Francisco ATB proof production with the first Civil War battlefield design in the series. Joel Iskowitz's reverse renders the 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry Monument, an upraised soldier flanking a stone obelisk on the Union line near the Copse of Trees, the focal point of Pickett's Charge on the third day of the battle. The Mint reported 1,268,958 clad proof sets sold for 2011, a roughly nine-percent drop from the 2010 figure and the production anchor for every 2011 proof issue. The dip reflected the broader pattern of post-launch attrition that runs through most modern commemorative series: launch-year sales overstate steady-state demand, and the second year resets to a more sustainable figure.

Authentication on the issue starts with the S mintmark above Washington's head and the surface contrast that defines a modern proof. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC apply two cameo designations that drive most of the market value: Cameo (CAM), strong mirror-to-frost contrast, and Deep Cameo (DCAM), where the frost on the infantry figure's uniform detail and the obelisk's carved face is heavy and dense and the field mirror is unbroken. Look at the soldier's musket and the obelisk's relief inscription for strike grading. The figural composition gives graders more device detail to evaluate than landscape designs in the 2010 group, which means strike sharpness matters at higher grades. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm) matches every Washington quarter struck since 1965, so counterfeit risk on the modern alloy is functionally zero.

As a collecting target, this is a Regular-classification issue widely available in PR69-DCAM across both major services and steadily supplied in PR70-DCAM at a workable premium. Pop reports show standard distribution through the Deep Cameo break, with the real climb at PR70-DCAM. Gettysburg's status as the most-visited Civil War battlefield gives the design a strong popularity profile among single-design buyers and history-focused collectors, slightly above the 2011 group's other four proofs.
