About this coinHistory

The 2012-S Denali, NIFC closed the first year of San Francisco business-strike ATB production, the fifth and final 2012 design sold direct to collectors through the Mint catalog. Susan Gamble's reverse, sculpted by Don Everhart, places a Dall sheep ram in the foreground with the south summit of Denali rising behind it, the same Alaskan composition carried on the Philadelphia and Denver circulation issues. The Mint produced 1,225,858 pieces, matching the uniform figure across the five 2012 NIFC dates and rounding out a debut-year run that totaled roughly 6.1 million S-mint business strikes across all designs.

Authentication separates the NIFC from its S-mint proof counterpart through finish. The coin is a business strike with cartwheel luster across the fields, the same surface character a Philadelphia or Denver circulation example shows in Mint State, while the 2012-S clad proof and silver proof Denali quarters both carry mirrored fields and frosted devices. The S mintmark sits above Washington's head in the standard position. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm) follows the standard quarter formula in use since 1965, so authentication is a question of identifying the finish category rather than testing the metal. Counterfeit risk is essentially nil; the supply-side economics of faking a modern collector quarter do not work.

This is a Regular-classification issue where set completeness drives demand. The Dall-sheep-and-Denali composition is one of the more visually distinctive 2012 ATB designs, and the issue has a small constituency among collectors who chase U.S. coinage depicting North American wildlife. Population reports at MS67 are well-stocked, MS68 examples come up regularly, and pricing tracks the NIFC norm of modest premium over face for raw examples and small step-ups at certified gem grades. Set builders working through the 45-entry NIFC run typically pick the issue up from broken annual Uncirculated Coin Sets at near-issue pricing. For the broader story of the ATB program and the NIFC collector-only product line, see the Washington ATB series history.
