About this coinHistory

The 2014-S Arches, NIFC is the third of the year's five San Francisco business-strike issues sold direct to collectors. Joseph Menna's reverse renders Delicate Arch in the middle distance with the La Sal Mountains as a backdrop, the same layered composition carried on the Philadelphia and Denver circulation strikes for the design. The Mint produced 1,168,308 pieces, the uniform 2014 NIFC figure, and distributed them through annual Uncirculated Coin Sets and two-roll bag products. The S-mint NIFC version is one of three product channels collectors can acquire the design through, alongside the P/D circulation strikes and the 2014-S clad and silver proofs that carry the same Menna design.

The coin is a business strike with cartwheel luster, not a proof, and the call between the two finishes is the load-bearing authentication question. Both the NIFC and the proof versions carry an S mintmark above Washington's head in the standard position, so mintmark does not separate them. Field reflection does: cartwheel rotation reads business strike, mirrored fields with frosted devices reads proof. Menna's design depends on depth, since the foreground arch, middle-distance terrain, and background mountains all sit on different visual planes, and on a NIFC business strike those layers read with the slightly soft definition typical of Mint State production rather than the high-contrast frosted relief a proof shows. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams) is the standard Washington quarter formula since 1965.

This is a Regular-classification issue with crossover demand beyond NIFC-set completists. Menna's Arches design has drawn its own small following among collectors who follow the artist's broader output across U.S. coinage, and Delicate Arch itself is among the most recognized natural landmarks in the National Park system. Population reports at MS67 are comfortable, MS68 examples come up regularly, and pricing tracks the NIFC norm of modest premiums for raw examples and small step-ups at certified gem grades. Set builders working through the 45-entry NIFC run typically pick the issue up at near-retail through dealer inventory.
