Joel Iskowitz's reverse depicts Roosevelt on horseback gazing across the North Dakota badlands where the 26th president ranched in the 1880s, the same composition carried on the Philadelphia and Denver circulation strikes. The Mint produced 1,093,510 pieces, matching the uniform 2016 NIFC figure and rounding out a year whose collector-product print runs sat at the lowest of the 2012-2016 batch. Roosevelt's connection to the badlands ranch country shaped the conservation views he later applied as president, and the design's horseback-portrait composition ties directly to that biographical thread.

The coin is a business strike with cartwheel luster, not a proof, and the call between the two finishes is the only authentication question of consequence. Both the 2016-S NIFC and the 2016-S clad and silver proofs of this design carry an S mintmark above Washington's head, so mintmark placement does not separate them.
