About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 1,093,510 pieces of the 2016-S Theodore Roosevelt clad proof, the figure matching the U.S. Mint Clad Proof Set sales total because the five 2016 quarters shipped as a packaged product. Joel Iskowitz's reverse depicts Theodore Roosevelt on horseback against the North Dakota badlands, the country where he ranched at the Maltese Cross and Elkhorn sites in the mid-1880s before returning east and where Theodore Roosevelt National Park preserves the eroded buttes and bottomland his cattle range covered. The figure occupies the foreground at three-quarter profile, with the layered badland formations rising behind. The issue is the third of five 2016 releases and the only ATB design depicting a U.S. president other than Washington himself on the obverse.

Proof finish on the issue is the standard San Francisco style: mirrored fields struck from polished planchets against dies frosted in chemical baths before each press run. Cameo (CAM) and Deep Cameo (DCAM) are the contrast designations PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, apply on top of the numeric grade, with DCAM the default outcome rather than an upgrade tier. The horse-and-rider composition makes strike quality especially diagnostic on the issue: graders watch the facial profile of Roosevelt, the saddle and tack detail, and the eroded-layer texture on the badland formations behind. Worn dies flatten the fine facial features and the horse's mane first. The clad composition (75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm) matches every Washington quarter struck since 1965, so counterfeit risk is essentially nil at the issue's price point.

The issue trades at the upper end of the lower price band among 2016 ATB proofs because the Roosevelt subject draws additional cross-disciplinary interest from presidential, conservation, and western-history collectors. A raw certified PR69-DCAM example moves for a small premium over the cost of breaking up a sealed 2016 Clad Proof Set, and PR70-DCAM examples in NGC or PCGS holders sit at a modestly higher tier. The president-on-coin framing gives the design recognition with general-audience buyers beyond the standard year-set base. The 1.09 million print run reflects the proof-set sales contraction running through the mid-decade.
