About this coinHistory

The 2019-W San Antonio Missions quarter is part of the first circulating coinage ever struck at the West Point Mint, an effort the U.S. Mint launched in 2019 to bring W-mint coins to the public through ordinary Federal Reserve channels. Chris Costello designed the reverse, which depicts the bell tower and ornate facade of Mission San Jose, the largest of the five Spanish colonial missions in the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. The W mintmark above Washington's head on the obverse is the only physical distinction from the standard 2019 San Antonio Missions quarter; 2019 W-mint coins carry no privy mark. That mintmark and the date are the entire authentication checklist.

Approximately two million San Antonio Missions W-mint pieces shipped into Federal Reserve coin distributions, with no advance public notice. The Mint's surprise-release strategy was aimed at re-engaging pocket-change collectors, and it produced the response the program was designed to generate. Coin roll hunters identified the W-mint coins quickly and began publishing finds, which drew more searchers into the market and accelerated the pull-out from circulation. Counterfeit concern is essentially nil; the issue is too recent, too inexpensive in low-mid Mint State, and too easily verified at the mintmark to attract fakers. PCGS and NGC have certified the coin in large numbers, with grade distributions weighted toward MS65 through MS67. Raw circulation-pulled pieces in mid-grade uncirculated condition remain the entry-level collector format.

The coin carries Semi-Key status in the ATB series, with scarcity driven by collector demand and the speed of withdrawal from circulation rather than by absolute production. Two million pieces is a high number in raw terms, but the rapid market pull-out left the secondary market as the practical source for anyone not searching rolls themselves. Pricing has remained stable since 2019 and tends to firm in MS66 and above, where slab counts are still manageable. The typical collecting target is a certified mid-Mint State example to complete the 2019-W subset of an ATB date set. For the broader story of the West Point experiment and the ATB program's design arc, see the Washington ATB series history.
