About this coinHistory

Denver's 2020 Tallgrass Prairie production reached 160,200,000 pieces, running 22.6 million ahead of Philadelphia's 137,600,000 for the same design and ranking as the highest 2020 Denver output across the year's five designs. The Kansas site, Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in the Flint Hills, protects what remains of an ecosystem that once stretched from southern Manitoba to northern Texas and from western Indiana into eastern Kansas. Less than 4% of the original prairie survives, almost all of it in the Flint Hills' shallow-soil terrain where row-crop conversion was uneconomic. Donna Weaver's reverse renders a regal fritillary butterfly above blooming wildflowers, the butterfly the anatomical focus and the flower stand carrying the design's botanical context.

Strike quality on the Denver issue often matches Philadelphia closely, with the grading discussion turning on the butterfly's wing veining and the petal-edge definition of the central wildflower. Mid-grade certified pieces in MS65 show legible wing detail across the upper margins, while MS67 candidates need sharp definition at the wing tips and through the flower bloom. Denver dies during the 2020 run held up through ordinary die life, and late-state coins lose definition first in the wing margins where the relief is shallowest. The clad composition follows the standard quarter formula at 75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core, 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm diameter, reeded edge. Counterfeit risk is functionally nil for circulation-strike modern clad quarters at face value.

The 2020-D Tallgrass Prairie is a Regular-classification issue where the registry-grade market lives at MS67 and above. Population reports thin meaningfully at MS68, where the typical 2020 dynamic holds: set-builder demand absorbs the limited high-grade output and listing prices hold their premium. The design closed the 2020 cycle and the 55th slot in the 56-design program, with only the 2021 Tuskegee Airmen issue remaining ahead. Roll hunters in Kansas and the broader Midwest pulled MS65 examples from original Denver bank rolls during the 2020 release window without much trouble. The 2020 cycle also produced the West Point V75 Privy Tallgrass Prairie release on the same Weaver reverse. For the broader story of the ATB program's 56-design arc, the 2008 authorizing legislation, and the 2022 transition to the American Women Quarters Program, see the Washington ATB series history.
