About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 141,200,000 quarters for the 2020 Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller release, matching the Weir Farm Philadelphia output exactly and marking the fourth 2020 ATB design. The site honored, the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park in Woodstock, Vermont, recognizes three generations of land stewardship at a single property: George Perkins Marsh, the 19th-century conservation thinker whose 1864 book Man and Nature shaped American forestry doctrine; Frederick Billings, the railroad executive and forester who began active reforestation on the property; and Mary and Laurance Rockefeller, who gifted the site to the National Park Service. Richard Masters' reverse shows a young boy planting a Norway spruce sapling while a man tends the planting, a generational-stewardship motif aligned tightly to the site's interpretive mission.

Strike quality on the Philadelphia issue separates at the figures' faces and the sapling's needle structure. Mid-grade examples in MS65 show legible facial detail on both figures, while MS67 candidates need crisp definition where the boy's hands meet the sapling and along the spruce needle clusters. Production for the design ran on the higher side of the 2020 cycle, and certified populations at PCGS (the Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC have shown the typical thinning pattern through MS67. The clad composition runs 75% copper-nickel over a pure copper core at 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm diameter, reeded edge, identical to every other clad ATB strike. Authentication concerns are essentially nil for circulation-strike modern clad coinage; the high-grade market runs through TPG (third-party grading) slabs.

The 2020-P Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller is a Regular-classification issue trading at face-plus levels raw and modest premiums in MS66 and above. The two-figure composition reads as one of the most narratively dense 2020 reverses, and the design has drawn measured commentary in the numismatic press for its successful rendering of a generational-stewardship scene at quarter scale. Roll hunters working original Philadelphia rolls during the 2020 release window pulled MS65 examples consistently. Registry collectors completing the 56-coin set treat the design as a paired purchase with Weir Farm from the same year, given the contemporaneous conservation-and-arts framing the two issues share. For the broader story of the ATB program's 56-design arc, the 2008 authorizing legislation, and the 2022 transition to the American Women Quarters Program, see the Washington ATB series history.
