About this coinHistory

The Denver striking of the Edith Kanaka'ole quarter delivered 368,600,000 pieces into the western Federal Reserve channels, trailing its Philadelphia counterpart by only about four million coins. Kanaka'ole spent her life keeping the chant traditions of the Big Island alive through hula, recording, and Hawaiian-language pedagogy at Hawaii Community College and the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Her halau, Halau O Kekuhi, became one of the most respected schools of kahiko-style hula, and the foundation that carries her name continues to publish and teach the protocols she preserved. The Denver Mint operations in 2023 ran double shifts on the AWQ program through the first quarter to keep pace with bank orders, which is part of why this issue and its Philadelphia twin both broke 360 million.

The reverse design by AIP Designer Emily Damstra and sculptor Renata Gordon presents Kanaka'ole in profile with her hair becoming the landscape behind her, surrounded by native Hawaiian plant forms, and inscribed with the directive E ho mau i ka 'ike. The Denver mintmark sits below IN GOD WE TRUST on the obverse, to the right of Washington's neck truncation as adapted from Laura Gardin Fraser's 1932 portrait. Specifications match the clad standard: a copper-nickel outer layer bonded to a pure copper core, 5.67 grams total weight, 24.3 millimeters across, reeded edge. Authenticators verify the D mintmark punch geometry against the reference for the year and look for crisp definition in the lettering of the foundation motto.

Western collectors typically encounter this issue first in pocket change, and gem rolls remain inexpensive in 2026 despite the high mintage. Top-population MS68 examples from PCGS and NGC carry premiums driven by registry demand more than scarcity. Denver bank-roll examples occasionally surface in original-mint condition from regional dealers, which provides a reliable acquisition path for set builders pursuing certified gem grades.
