About this coinHistory

Eleanor Roosevelt served as First Lady from 1933 to 1945, longer than any other person to hold that role, and her career after the White House proved more consequential still. She accepted appointment as a United States delegate to the new United Nations in 1946, chaired the drafting committee that produced the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, and spent the next decade traveling and writing on civil rights, labor rights, and the postwar reconstruction of international institutions. The Philadelphia striking of her quarter delivered 284,000,000 pieces into the Federal Reserve channels, a healthy production figure for an AWQ issue released later in the calendar year when bank demand for new quarters typically eases.

Christina Hess designed the reverse, which presents Roosevelt in three-quarter view paired with a passage from her own writings, and Phebe Hemphill executed the sculpting that translates the soft modeling of the portrait into circulating relief. The text element on the reverse reads as a continuous inscription rather than a contained quote block, which gives the design more flow than typical motto-bearing reverses. Laura Gardin Fraser's 1932 Washington portrait occupies the obverse. Specifications follow the standard AWQ clad: 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel clad over a copper core, 5.67 grams total, 24.3 millimeters wide, reeded edge. Authentication focuses on the legibility of the quote inscription at small scale and the integrity of the portrait's hairline detail, both of which weaken on worn coins faster than the perimeter lettering.

Roll-fresh examples from the first months of 2023 release feed most of the MS67 and MS68 populations at Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), and the broader pool of gem grades keeps prices reasonable for type set work. Roll searchers and registry collectors both rely on the standard population reports from major grading services to track availability at the gem-grade level, where competition determines premium structure.
