About this coinHistory

The San Francisco "not intended for circulation" Maria Tallchief quarter completes the third-mint trio for collectors building full 2023 American Women sets. Tallchief, born Elizabeth Marie Tall Chief in Fairfax, Oklahoma in 1925, became the first Native American prima ballerina and the first American-born dancer to hold that rank at a major international company. Her Osage father and her family's relocation to Los Angeles gave her access to Russian-trained teachers who recognized her capacity early. She joined the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo at seventeen, married choreographer George Balanchine in 1946, and originated the technically demanding roles that defined the early New York City Ballet. She danced until 1965 and later founded the Chicago City Ballet. The 2023 S NIFC issue shares the 829,526 distribution figure with the clad proof and shipped through United States Mint bag and roll product lines.

NIFC strikes use the program's standard clad composition at 91.67% copper-nickel cladding bonded to pure copper, 5.67 grams in total weight, 24.3 millimeter diameter, with a reeded edge. The S mintmark appears on the obverse and the finish is uncirculated rather than proof, producing satiny rather than mirror fields. Benjamin Sowards's reverse design, sculpted by Joseph Menna, captures Tallchief in arabesque with Osage feather elements integrated into the open field. Authentication focuses on the satin texture of the fields, the sharpness of the S mintmark, and the absence of bag marks across the dancer's figure, since these coins move from press to packaging without intermediate handling.

Raw roll premiums have held steady. Certified MS-68 and MS-69 examples in Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) holders attract registry collectors completing three-mint American Women sets. Original sealed Mint bags and rolls remain the most reliable source for certified gem examples, with sealing tags providing dealer-verified provenance for high-grade submissions.
