The 1880 three-cent nickel is a key date, with a circulation strike mintage of only 21,000 coins. The figure is lower than most half-cent dates from the early nineteenth century, and in the context of a nickel coin produced in the 1880s, it represents near-total abandonment of the denomination for commercial purposes. By 1880, the three-cent nickel was effectively proof-only with a token annual circulation production to maintain legal status.
The 21,000 coins struck in 1880 make the date genuinely rare. Most surviving examples are in lower circulated grades. Fine is harder to find. Very Fine and above are scarce, and Uncirculated coins command premiums that reflect both the low mintage and the coin's status as one of the toughest dates in the series to acquire in high grade.
The low mintage was not caused by crisis or political upheaval. It simply reflected the absence of commercial demand for the denomination. The three-cent nickel had outlived its usefulness. Three-cent postage was gone, the silver trime was gone, and there was nothing for the coin to do except appear in annual proof sets and maintain a ghostly presence in the regular coinage. A collector building a complete date set of three-cent nickels faces the 1880 as the primary obstacle.
