About this coinHistory

The 1858 three-cent silver is the final year of the Type II design. The Mint produced approximately 1.6 million coins before redesigning the trime again for 1859. Type II had lasted only five years (1854-1858), the shortest run of any trime design, and its end marked another attempt to solve the coin's persistent striking problems. The three-line star outlines on Type II created opposing relief between obverse and reverse that made the coin difficult to strike fully.

The 1858 is a reasonable type coin for the Type II subtype, with a larger mintage than the scarce 1855 and a lower price than the key dates of the Civil War years that would follow. A collector who wants a single example of the three-outline star design can choose the 1858 without breaking the budget for key dates.
