About this coinHistory

Final proof of the Type II design, the 1858 preceded the 1859 transition to Type III. The Mint would modify the design to reduce the star outlines from three to two, easing the striking problems that had plagued Type II. Proof collectors building a complete proof type set need at least one Type II proof, and the 1858 is one of five years in which Type II proofs were produced.
