About this coinHistory

Just 4,000 coins: that was the 1867 trime mintage, the lowest circulation strike figure since 1865. The Mint was producing essentially nothing for commerce. The same year Secretary of State William Seward negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million, a deal widely mocked in the press as "Seward's Folly" before history vindicated it. Whatever 1867 trimes exist in collectors' hands today came from a tiny initial production that has been preserved through private collections for over 150 years.

The 1867 is one of the rarest trimes in any grade. Surviving examples are thin on the ground, and most are in lower circulated condition. The coin circulated briefly, if at all, before being set aside by collectors or dealers who recognized the extraordinarily low mintage.
