About this coinHistory

The 1869 9 Over 8 proof three-cent silver is the proof companion to the circulation-strike overdate variety. The same die repurposing that produced the business-strike overdate also yielded proof examples, and the variety is collected separately from the standard 1869 proof. Identification requires examining the final digit of the date for traces of the underlying 8 beneath the 9.

The proof format preserves the overdate detail more clearly than circulation strikes, where wear can obscure the doubled impression. A collector pursuing the overdate variety may find the proof version easier to authenticate than a worn circulation strike, assuming either one can be located.
