About this coinHistory

The 1869 two-cent piece had a mintage of 1,546,500 coins, roughly half the 1868 output and the lowest circulation strike figure since the denomination began. The Mint was essentially producing the coin to maintain its legal-tender presence rather than to meet any genuine commercial need. The denomination had been made obsolete by the returning silver half dime, the Shield nickel, and the three-cent nickel, but Congress had not yet formally discontinued it, so Philadelphia kept stamping them out in diminishing numbers.

1869 was the year the transcontinental railroad met at Promontory Summit, Utah. Leland Stanford drove the ceremonial golden spike on May 10, connecting the Central Pacific to the Union Pacific and cutting coast-to-coast travel from months to days. That September, financier Jay Gould and his partners attempted to corner the US gold market, triggering the Black Friday panic of September 24 that crashed markets before President Grant ordered the Treasury to dump federal gold reserves to break the corner. The two-cent piece, worth 1/50th of a dollar, handled none of these events directly, but the coins delivered by the Philadelphia Mint that year circulated through both.

PCGS estimates about 1,000 survive across all grades, with 225 at gem quality. An MS67 Red-Brown sold for $6,013 at Heritage in December 2021. Fully red examples are scarce, as they are for all two-cent piece dates, and command substantial premiums over Red-Brown or Brown coins of the same grade.
