About this coinHistory

The 1873 Closed 3 proof two-cent piece is one of only two forms in which the final-year two-cent piece exists, both of them proof-only issues. No circulation strikes were produced in 1873. The Coinage Act of February 12, 1873, formally discontinued the denomination, and the Mint struck only proofs for collectors wishing to complete their sets. Approximately 600 Closed 3 proofs were produced.

The Closed 3 designation refers to the shape of the numeral 3 in the date. On the Closed 3, the upper and lower arms of the 3 curve inward, nearly meeting to form a closed loop. The distinction from the Open 3 is in the shape of the digit's terminal curves. The Closed 3 was the earlier of the two punch styles used in 1873 and is the more commonly encountered of the two proof varieties for the date.

As a final-year proof, the 1873 Closed 3 carries the weight of being the terminal issue of a denomination that had existed for only ten years. The two-cent piece had been created to solve a wartime coin shortage, had served its purpose briefly, and had faded as commerce returned to normal. The 1873 proofs are its epitaph.
