Barber Half Dollars (Liberty Head)

Barber Half Dollars (Liberty Head)

Charles E. Barber designed the half dollar that carries his name, completing the matched set of dime, quarter, and half dollar that entered production together in 1892. The half dollar obverse was identical in concept to the other two denominations, Liberty in a Phrygian cap with laurel wreath, scaled up for the 30.6-millimeter planchet. The reverse carried a heraldic eagle with shield, arrows, olive branch, and E PLURIBUS UNUM, with IN GOD WE TRUST above. At the half dollar's size, Barber's design had room to breathe, and the coin is arguably the most visually balanced of the three Barber denominations. The details are cleaner, the proportions more natural, and the eagle on the reverse has a presence that the cramped dime and quarter versions cannot quite match. Not that anyone has ever called a Barber coin beautiful, but if you had to pick one of the three, the half dollar would win.
