1842-O Large Date Seated Liberty Quarter

The combined 1842-O mintage of 769,000 coins is split between two date punch varieties: Large Date and Small Date. The Large Date uses taller, heavier numerals that sit lower relative to Liberty's base. The distinction is most easily made on coins in Fine or better condition by comparing the height and weight of the numerals to the surrounding design elements. The Large Date is the more commonly encountered of the two varieties and is the standard issue for collectors pursuing the 1842-O as a single date entry.

New Orleans quarter production in the early 1840s fed a commercial economy centered on cotton trading, river commerce, and the port traffic that made New Orleans one of the wealthiest cities in the United States. The coins circulated hard. Most surviving 1842-O Large Date quarters show the heavy, even wear of extended commercial service, and VG to Fine is the typical grade range. Mint State examples are uncommon, and gems are very rare across both 1842-O varieties.
