About this coinHistory

The 1892-S dime is the first San Francisco issue of the Barber series and the lowest-mintage circulation strike outside the named Semi-Keys. A reported 990,710 pieces left the western facility, a figure that sits just under the million-coin threshold and well below the multi-million outputs from Philadelphia and New Orleans in the same debut year. Charles E. Barber's Liberty Head design arrived at all three operating mints in 1892, but San Francisco produced the issue in restrained numbers from the start. Western commerce absorbed the dimes quickly, and few were set aside.

Strike quality follows the broader pattern of San Francisco Barber dime production, with reasonably sharp central detail on the better dies but softness creeping into the LIBERTY headband and the wreath bow on later die states. Authentication is the first concern given the low mintage. The standard counterfeit pathway is an added S mintmark applied to a circulated Philadelphia 1892, since the parent issue is common and the upgrade in value is steep. A genuine S sits beneath the wreath, shows clean serifs, and shares the same metallic flow and patina as the surrounding field. Tooling marks, raised edges around the mintmark, or a punch with the wrong sharpness are immediate warnings. Weight should hit 2.50 grams, the diameter measures 17.9 millimeters, and the reeded edge should run uniform with no smoothing near the mintmark. PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) populations remain modest above Extremely Fine, and gem Mint State coins are genuinely scarce.

Within the series, the 1892-S sits just above the Semi-Key cohort of 1896-O, 1896-S, 1897-O, 1901-S, and 1903-S, all of which fall in the 575,000 to 632,000 range, while the 1895-O remains the standout circulation Key at 440,000. The 990,710 figure places this issue at the upper edge of that scarce-date band, and many specialists list it alongside the named Semi-Keys for that reason. For a date-and-mintmark run or a first-year-of-issue set, the coin functions as a required component rather than an optional fill. Raw examples in Good through Fine circulate at shows and through dealer inventories, but anything offered as Very Fine or higher deserves certification given the counterfeit risk.
