1904-S

The 1904-S Barber dime is one of the quieter rarities in a series full of tough dates. San Francisco struck just 800,000 dimes that year, the only branch-mint dime production for 1904, and that sub-million figure puts the issue in the company of better S-mint Barber dates collectors have long chased. Charles E. Barber's Liberty Head design had been in circulation since 1892, and by 1904 the West Coast economy was still expanding faster than its small-change supply. Most of these dimes went straight to work and stayed there for decades, so while circulated examples surface with patience, attractive higher-grade survivors are noticeably thin.

Strike quality runs from passable to soft, with the laurel wreath and the upper-right corner of the shield often showing the weakest definition. Look at the highest curls of Liberty's hair and at the leaves that frame ONE DIME, since strong central detail and a crisp wreath tend to track together on this date. Authentication is where new buyers need to slow down. Genuine 1904 Philadelphia dimes have been altered with an added S for decades, so the mintmark deserves a loupe. The S should sit cleanly below the wreath knot, with even spacing to the surrounding field and microscopic flow lines following the same direction as the rest of the strike. Tooling marks, a raised platform around the letter, or a mintmark that looks pressed-in rather than struck-up are immediate disqualifiers. Confirm the weight at 2.50 grams in 90 percent silver, a 17.9 millimeter diameter, and a fully reeded edge. PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) holders are the most efficient defense against added-mintmark work.

Collectors usually meet the 1904-S in Good through Fine, where the date and mintmark are readable and the price of admission stays reasonable. Very Fine and Extremely Fine examples step up sharply, and anything with original Mint State surfaces is treated as a condition rarity by date specialists. Some advanced collectors argue the 800,000 mintage and modest survivor pool justify a Semi-Key designation rather than a generic better-date label.
