About this coinHistory

The 1905-S Barber dime represents a sharp turn in West Coast production. After the thin 1903-S and 1904-S deliveries, both under a million pieces, San Francisco lifted its output to 6,855,000 dimes for 1905. That is the highest S-mint figure of the entire 1892 through 1916 Liberty Head run by a wide margin, and it reflects sustained demand for circulating silver up and down the Pacific coast. The coin follows the standard profile Charles E. Barber set for the series: 2.50 grams of ninety percent silver and ten percent copper, a 17.9 millimeter diameter, and a reeded edge. No major varieties are recognized for the date.

Strike quality on the 1905-S is one of its quiet strengths. The date generally comes well struck for a San Francisco Barber dime, with the laurel wreath, the leaves around ONE DIME, and Liberty's headband lettering all reading more crisply than on the soft 1903-S and 1904-S issues. Authentication starts with the basics. Confirm the weight at 2.50 grams on a calibrated scale and look for a fully reeded edge with no file work or seam. The S mintmark sits beneath the wreath knot on the reverse and should appear struck up rather than pressed in, with surface continuity to the surrounding field. Tool marks, a raised platform, or a slight color difference under magnification are the usual signs of an added mintmark lifted from a common Philadelphia host. Population reports from the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) show the issue well represented in circulated grades and meaningfully thinner in higher Mint State.

For the year-set collector, the 1905-S fills the West Coast slot in a three-mint year that also included a 14.55 million piece Philadelphia issue and a 3.4 million piece New Orleans run notable for its Micro O variety. Within the broader date-and-mint set, the 1905-S is a workmanlike middle slot rather than a stopper. Circulated examples in Good through Very Fine turn up routinely at shows and online, Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated pieces step up at predictable intervals, and gem Mint State examples are scarce enough to reward patient bidding. For production figures and the full context of the series, see the Barber Dimes (Liberty Head) series history.
