About this coinHistory

The 1960 Doubled Die Obverse proof Roosevelt dime shows noticeable doubling on the obverse legend and date, created during the hubbing process when the die received two offset impressions. The doubling is most visible on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, where secondary lettering images appear adjacent to the primary text. On well-preserved examples, the doubling is visible under low magnification and sometimes without any magnification at all.

The variety was struck from proof dies, meaning every example is a proof. It shares the 1960 proof's total production figure, but only a fraction of the 1,691,602 proofs show the doubled die. PCGS and NGC both attribute the variety on certified examples. Collectors pursuing Roosevelt dime proof varieties consider the 1960 DDO one of the more significant entries. Certified examples command premiums above standard 1960 proofs, with higher-grade DDO coins drawing specialist attention at major auctions.
