The 1973-S Proof Roosevelt Dime is the standard S-mint proof issue from a year with no major proof errors in the dime denomination. Reported mintage came in at 2,760,339 sets, a noticeable step down from the 1972 figure and a reflection of softening proof set demand in the run-up to the Bicentennial coinage program that would follow. The San Francisco Assay Office handled all proof striking, with the S mintmark placed below the date on the obverse in its standard proof location. The 1973 proof set marked the last fully standard issue before the Bicentennial-related changes began to reshape the proof program in 1975 and 1976.
Authentication rests on standard proof diagnostics. Genuine examples show deeply mirrored fields with proof depth that no business strike can replicate, squared rim transitions instead of the rounded rims of a circulation coin, and crisp definition across Roosevelt's profile and the reverse torch. The S mintmark must be sharp and well-formed; weak or partial mintmarks should be examined under magnification, because heavily filled mintmarks from die wear can superficially resemble more interesting varieties and require certification to resolve. Cameo (CAM) and Deep Cameo (DCAM) designations are awarded when contrast between frosted devices and mirrored fields is strong; 1973-S cameo populations sit comfortably within the early-to-mid clad-era range and provide reasonable access to DCAM material in the PR68 and PR69 grades.
For collectors, the 1973-S Proof is common in the proof set itself and the standard target for type collectors filling in the year. PR69 DCAM examples are widely available, and PR70 DCAM is the genuine condition rarity at the top of the grading scale. The lower proof set mintage relative to 1972 has not translated into significantly higher PR69 DCAM prices, since survival of cameo material in original government packaging has been excellent. PR70 DCAM remains the only meaningful price tier. For broader context on the clad-era proof program, see the Roosevelt Dime series history.
