2005-P Satin Finish

The 2005-P Satin Finish Roosevelt dime is the inaugural piece in a new collector-issue program the Mint launched with the 2005 Annual Uncirculated Mint Set. Mintage finished at 1,160,000 pieces, the total Mint Set production for the year, with every example struck at Philadelphia from specially-prepared dies on regular cupronickel-clad planchets. The 2.268-gram, 17.91-millimeter standard was unchanged from the circulation strike, but the dies were treated to produce a uniform satin or matte surface that the Mint described as a "specially finished" alternative to the standard cartwheel luster of business strikes. The piece is Not Intended For Circulation and was distributed exclusively in the Annual Uncirculated Mint Set alongside its 2005-D Satin Finish counterpart and the satin-finish examples of the other denominations.

Authentication on the 2005-P Satin Finish rests on the surface diagnostic and on the original packaging. The fields show a uniform satin or matte appearance with soft, even sheen rather than the rotating cartwheel luster of a circulation strike or the mirrored reflectivity of a proof; rims are squared more tightly than circulation but less crisply than proof. PCGS and NGC certify the issue under the Specimen designation, SP, rather than under the Mint State MS designation used for circulation strikes; the SP attribution on a third-party holder is the safest single confirmation that the piece is the satin-finish issue rather than a misidentified circulation strike. Original Mint Set cellophane is the working authentication baseline for raw examples, and the composition is identical to the circulation strike at 2.268 grams.

The 2005-P Satin Finish is the inaugural entry in the six-year 2005-through-2010 satin-finish program and is required for any modern Roosevelt date set that pursues every Mint product. Distribution exclusively through the 2005 Mint Set means survivorship in original packaging remains high, and base-grade SP examples trade at modest premiums above face. The condition-rarity tier opens at SP67 and tightens at SP68 and SP69 where PCGS and NGC population reports thin to registry-relevant levels and four-figure pricing appears for the finest certified pieces. Demand concentrates on top-of-pop SP69 and SP70 examples, on full P+D satin pairs, and on intact 2005 Mint Sets carrying the launch-year satin pieces.
