2009-P

The 2009-P Roosevelt dime came out of Philadelphia at just 96,500,000 pieces, a 77 percent collapse from the 413-million 2008-P figure and the lowest Philadelphia output of the entire modern Roosevelt run. The collapse tracks the Great Recession's compression of Federal Reserve coin orders, which fell to a small fraction of pre-2007 volume as commercial cash flow froze across the year. The 96.5-million figure runs roughly five percent of the typical mid-2000s Philadelphia output. The mintage ran parallel to the four-design Lincoln Bicentennial cent program, the District of Columbia and Territorial Quarters program, and the Native American Dollar launch at the same facility. The P mintmark held its established position above the date, the clad sandwich kept the 2.268-gram, 17.91-millimeter cupronickel-on-copper specification, and strike quality across the year held up despite the production cutback. Authentication on the 2009-P follows the standard clad-dime workflow. Weight on a calibrated scale should read 2.268 grams, the P mintmark must show sharp serifs above the date under 10x magnification, and Full Bands evaluation runs across the two parallel bands at the torch midpoint on the reverse. Full Bands, the third-party grading designation indicating complete separation of the two central torch bands, is reasonably available on 2009-P because the low mintage drove early collector and dealer hoarding from bank rolls and Mint sets, putting upgraded examples into the supply chain before circulation attrition could compress the certified pool. The FB premium concentrates at MS68 FB and finer where PCGS and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, population reports thin to registry-relevant levels. The date carries no recognized RPM or doubled-die premium variety at Cherrypickers' principal listing. The 2009-P trades at a sustained premium over the surrounding billion-piece years because the 96.5-million figure is genuinely scarce in any modern-Roosevelt context. Roll and bag prices run several multiples of face, and base-grade Mint State examples carry a routine date premium rather than type-coin pricing. The low mintage drove enough early hoarding from bank wraps that MS66 and MS67 FB examples are relatively available; the condition-rarity step opens meaningfully at MS68 FB where PCGS and NGC populations thin to registry-relevant levels and finest-known examples reach low-to-mid four-figure pricing at public auction. The 2009-P is the recognized modern-era Key for the Philadelphia mintmark and is required for any complete Roosevelt date-and-mintmark set.
