About this coinHistory

San Francisco delivered 854,785 standard cupronickel-clad proof Roosevelt dimes in 2013 for inclusion in the regular annual proof set, an 8 percent step up from the 794,002 2012-S clad figure. The 2013 proof set carried the America the Beautiful Quarters fourth-year five-coin set, the Native American Dollar with the "Treaty with the Delawares" reverse, the Lincoln Shield cent, the Westward Journey nickel, and the Roosevelt dime. The 2013 dime joined the regular Silver Proof Set as well, with the Mint striking a parallel 2013-S Silver Proof Roosevelt dime at roughly 467,691 pieces; the clad and silver issues run together through the same proof program. The S mintmark sat sharp above the date, dies were hand-polished to mirror finish, and the clad planchet was struck on a slower press to produce the squared rims and frosted devices that distinguish proof from circulation finish.

Authentication on a 2013-S clad proof rests on the standard finish diagnostics. Mirrored fields under 10x magnification show the deep reflective surface produced by hand-polished dies, the rim profile runs at a sharp ninety-degree transition to the field, and frosted devices appear on examples that earn Cameo and Deep Cameo designations from PCGS and NGC. Cameo, the grading designation that mirrored fields and frosted relief show clear contrast, and Deep Cameo, the same effect at heavier frost depth, carry the premium pricing at PR69 and PR70. Weight should read 2.268 grams on a calibrated scale, and edge view shows the dark copper-core sandwich of clad construction. The parallel 2013-S silver proof, struck in 90% silver at 2.50 grams, separates immediately on the scale and on edge color (no copper stripe), so weight is the single best diagnostic for telling clad and silver 2013 proofs apart.

The 2013-S clad sits in the mid range of the early-2010s clad-proof Roosevelt mintage band and trades at routine modern-proof pricing. PR69 DCAM is available at modest price levels, and PR70 DCAM forms the condition-rarity step where PCGS and NGC populations thin to registry-relevant levels. The 854,785-piece mintage carries no fundamental base-grade scarcity; collector demand concentrates on the PR70 DCAM tier and on full Cameo-DCAM date sets covering the early-2010s clad-proof run. For the modern San Francisco proof program, see the Roosevelt Dime series history.
