The Silver Reverse Proof 2018-S Roosevelt dime came out of San Francisco, marking five decades since SF resumed proof production in 1968 following the silver-circulation shutdown of the early 1960s. The set carried a 200,000-coin authorized ceiling and reported sales of 199,177 at program close, making 200,000 the mintage figure used across major catalogs. The set bundled silver reverse-proof versions of every regular-issue 2018 denomination in a specially designed protective folder with the 50th-anniversary inscription. The dime used the same 90 percent silver, 10 percent copper alloy carrying through the 1992-2018 silver-proof program, weighed 2.50 grams against the 2.268-gram clad, and carried the S mintmark sharp above the date. This is the only Reverse Proof Roosevelt dime ever struck; no comparable finish appears elsewhere in the series.
Authentication on a 2018-S Silver Reverse Proof rests on three diagnostics. First, the reverse-proof finish: standard proof orientation places mirrored fields against frosted devices, but Reverse Proof inverts the pattern, frosted fields surround mirrored, polished devices. Second, weight on a calibrated scale must read 2.50 grams against the clad 2.268 grams, and the edge view should show the solid silver-color profile rather than the dark copper-core sandwich of clad issues. Third, the issue is properly authenticated when accompanied by original 2018 Silver Reverse Proof Set packaging, the dedicated 50th-anniversary folder distinguishes the set's components from any after-market alteration. PCGS and NGC label encapsulations identify the issue as "Silver Reverse Proof" and apply the routine PR69 and PR70 grading scale; PR70 specimens carry premium pricing as the rarest grade-tier examples from the 200,000-coin program.
The 2018-S Silver Reverse Proof classifies on this site as a Semi-Key Roosevelt issue for three structural reasons: it is the only Reverse Proof finish ever applied to the dime denomination, the 200,000-coin set-tied mintage is the lowest of any 2018 Roosevelt issue and among the lowest of any post-2009 modern Roosevelt issue, and the issue carries unique commemorative status tied to the 50th anniversary of SF proof production. PR69 examples trade at the routine silver-reverse-proof level and PR70 examples carry meaningful registry premiums. Most surviving sets remain in original 2018 Silver Reverse Proof packaging and the issue is required for any complete modern silver-proof Roosevelt date set or any finish-variety set. For the SF facility's 50th-anniversary proof program and the closing year of the 90 percent silver-proof era, see the Roosevelt Dime series history.
