About this coinHistory

The 2026-P "Emerging Liberty" dime is the Philadelphia issue of the only non-Roosevelt dime struck in the eighty years since the Roosevelt design debuted in 1946. The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 (Public Law 116-330) authorized a one-year design replacement on the dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar for the nation's 250th anniversary, and the dime's commemorative obverse and reverse fully replace the Sinnock portrait and torch-and-branches design for calendar year 2026 only. The obverse carries a Liberty figure wearing a liberty cap accented with stars and stripes, designed by Esao Andrews of the Artistic Infusion Program and engraved by U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Craig A. Campbell, with the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the anchor date 1776~2026. The reverse, designed and sculpted by Eric David Custer, shows an eagle in flight carrying arrows above the motto LIBERTY OVER TYRANNY. The clad sandwich keeps the 2.268-gram, 17.91-millimeter cupronickel-on-pure-copper specification, and the P mintmark holds its established position on the obverse. Final mintage will be confirmed once the U.S. Mint closes audited reporting for 2026; Roosevelt is scheduled to return on the dime in 2027.

Authentication on a 2026-P Emerging Liberty rests on the design itself: any 2026 dime that shows the Sinnock Roosevelt portrait is a counterfeit, a misdated coin, or a die error, because no 2026 dime was struck with the Roosevelt design. The Liberty-cap obverse must show the distinctive stars-and-stripes cap, the LIBERTY OVER TYRANNY reverse must show the eagle in flight with arrows, and the 1776~2026 dual-date inscription must read clearly on the obverse. Weight on a calibrated scale must read 2.268 grams, and the edge view shows the standard reddish copper-core stripe of clad construction. The P mintmark must show sharp serifs in the standard position under 10x magnification. Original 2026 Mint Sets and bank-wrapped rolls provide the principal authentication context for the issue.

The 2026-P Emerging Liberty classifies as regular at every base grade but carries a structural single-year premium reflecting its status as the first non-Roosevelt dime since 1946 and the only dime struck under the Semiquincentennial Circulating Coin program. Collector demand concentrates on three anchors: the 2026-P is required for any complete 250th-anniversary set across all four redesigned denominations; the one-year design carries the same single-year scarcity dynamic that drove the 1975-1976 Bicentennial varieties into permanent commemorative status; and the issue is the first design-replacement dime in modern U.S. coinage history. MS67 condition grading on the new design opens the registry-relevant tier where PCGS and NGC populations thin to meaningful step-ups. Original packaging from 2026 Mint products carries premium provenance value. For the design history and the Semiquincentennial program, see the Roosevelt Dime series history.
