About this coinHistory

The 1837 Large Date is one half of the inaugural Seated Liberty dime, sharing a combined Philadelphia delivery of roughly 682,500 pieces with its Small Date counterpart. The figure on the obverse, seated on a rock with shield and pole, is Christian Gobrecht's adaptation of the same composition he used on the 1836-1839 silver dollar issued under Thomas Sully's sketches. There are no stars around her, the field is open, and that austerity makes this issue unmistakable on a tray of nineteenth-century dimes. Within the year the Mint used two date logotypes, and the Large Date carries digits that are visibly taller and more widely spaced. The 7 sits with a curved, flagged top and the upper loop of the 8 is noticeably larger than the lower loop, an obvious tell once the eye is calibrated.

Strike on the Large Date generally runs better than what collectors expect from a first-year issue. Gobrecht's working dies were freshly hubbed and the Mint had taken obvious care with delivery, so well-defined head detail, full shield lines, and complete wreath leaves are reachable in choice circulated grades. Authentication centers on three points: the new 2.67 g weight standard set by the Mint Act of January 18, 1837, which separates a genuine coin from many cast counterfeits; the date logotype itself, since some sellers conflate Large Date and Small Date pricing; and the obverse field, which must be free of any star punches. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, both certify Large Date as a distinct attribution. Population reports show the variety running slightly more available than the Small Date in circulated grades, though Mint State coins are scarce on either side.

For a collector, this is the most accessible avenue into the No Stars type, which makes it the standard first acquisition for anyone building a Seated dime type set. Circulated examples in problem-free Fine through Extremely Fine clear specialist inventories quickly and rarely linger long enough to require a watchlist. Mint State coins require patience and a willingness to wait for a clean strike on the head and shield. The Semi-Key designation on the site reflects the issue's first-year status and the steady premium it carries against the surrounding Stars-era dates, not raw scarcity in low grades. For the broader story of Gobrecht's design, the No Stars to Stars to Drapery transitions, and the series' production arc, see the Seated Liberty Dime series history.
