About this coinHistory

The 1837 Small Date is the second of the two No Stars logotype varieties from the inaugural Seated Liberty dime year, sharing the combined Philadelphia delivery of roughly 682,500 pieces with the Large Date. Both coins carry the same Gobrecht obverse, Liberty seated on a rock with shield and pole and no stars surrounding her, taken from his earlier work on the 1836-1839 silver dollar from Thomas Sully sketches. What separates the Small Date is the date logotype: shorter, more compact digits with closer spacing, a 7 with a straighter and shorter flag at the top, and an 8 whose two loops sit closer to equal in size than the obviously top-heavy 8 on the Large Date. The Mint switched logotypes during the year and both saw working die service, with the Small Date generally running scarcer in collector hands.

Strike on the Small Date trends slightly softer than its Large Date sibling. The compact digits often appear flatter into late die states, and authenticators look for clear separation between the 3 and the 7 as well as full base lines on the 1 and 8. Liberty's head detail follows the same pattern as the Large Date, well rendered when fresh and softening on later die states. The 2.67 g weight standard from the Mint Act of January 18, 1837 applies to both varieties and remains the simplest mechanical defense against cast or pressed counterfeits. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, attribute Small Date and Large Date as distinct issues, and the population reports show Small Date running thinner across most circulated grades. Mint State coins are condition-rare at either variety.

For a date-set or type-set buyer, the Small Date is the harder of the two 1837 No Stars varieties to find with strong eye appeal. Most collectors satisfy the No Stars type-set slot with the more available Large Date, leaving the Small Date to specialists who want both. Circulated examples in honest VF or XF turn up regularly enough that patience pays, and the price spread over the Large Date stays consistent rather than dramatic in the lower grades. AU and Mint State coins carry meaningful premiums and surface less frequently at auction. The Semi-Key designation on the site reflects the issue's first-year status and the steady demand pressure that No Stars dimes attract across all grade bands. For the broader story of Gobrecht's design, the No Stars to Stars to Drapery transitions, and the series' production arc, see the Seated Liberty Dime series history.
