About this coinHistory

The 1839 No Drapery dime continues the Stars No Drapery subtype that began at Philadelphia mid-1838, with a delivery of 1,053,115 pieces. The coin carries Christian Gobrecht's seated figure surrounded by 13 stars, with no drapery falling from Liberty's left elbow; the elbow itself meets the gown cleanly, and the rock she rests on shows the same proportions Philadelphia had been using since the Stars hub arrived. Robert Ball Hughes had not yet been engaged to modify the design, and would not be until 1840. This is a one-year Philadelphia entry within the Stars No Drapery subtype, since Philadelphia's 1838 production split across two star sizes and the transitional Partial Drapery, and 1840 splits across both No Drapery and Drapery hubs. The 1839 sits alone as a clean, single-variety year for the subtype at the Mother Mint.

Strike on the 1839 No Drapery generally runs solid for the era. Dies were fresh through much of the year and the Mint's growing familiarity with the Seated design produced more consistent metal flow than the 1837 No Stars coins required. Liberty's head detail and the stars near the rim usually come well struck on coins above Fine. Authentication is straightforward by Seated dime standards: confirm the 2.67 g weight specified by the Mint Act of January 18, 1837, confirm the absence of drapery at the elbow, and confirm clean original surfaces, since cleaned and brightened examples are common given the age. Counterfeit pressure is light compared with the 1838-O Key, and altered-mintmark hazards do not apply here, since this is a no-mintmark Philadelphia issue. Most certified survivors fall in the Fine through Extremely Fine range, with AU coins available with patience and Mint State coins running scarce.

For a collector, the 1839 No Drapery is the most accessible Philadelphia Stars No Drapery type-set entry. The combination of a single-variety year, a decent mintage, and reasonable strike quality keeps the issue available in circulated grades at price points within easy reach of date-set and type-set buyers alike. Mint State coins require more effort and a willingness to wait for clean strike on the head and stars; the price spread between an honest AU and a low-end Mint State coin can be sharp. The Regular classification on the site reflects that availability accurately. Buyers should focus on original surfaces and full star centrils first, and grade number second; a problem-free XF often offers better long-term collector value than a brightened AU.
