About this coinHistory

The 1839-O No Drapery is the second New Orleans dime ever struck, following the first-year 1838-O delivery with a combined 1,243,272-piece run that also includes the Reverse of 1838 die-pairing variety. The bulk of the 1839-O output uses the standard 1839 reverse hub paired with the Stars No Drapery obverse, the same subtype Philadelphia was running through the year. With the No Stars era behind it, New Orleans had moved to the 13-star Gobrecht layout, and the elbow remained clean of drapery a full year before Robert Ball Hughes would be engaged at Philadelphia to modify the hub. The mintmark O sits on the reverse below the wreath bow, which makes the issue easily distinguished from its Philadelphia counterpart even when toning has muted the obverse.

Strike on the 1839-O follows the New Orleans pattern of the period: serviceable rather than crisp, with softness at Liberty's head detail and at the wreath leaves being typical even on coins that grade VF or finer. Authentication centers on three points: the 2.67 g weight standard from the Mint Act of January 18, 1837; the clean elbow with no drapery; and confirmation that the reverse uses the standard 1839 hub, since the Reverse of 1838 die-pairing variety carries meaningfully higher value at every grade. Counterfeit pressure is moderate compared with the 1838-O Key, but altered-mintmark concern still applies, and a tooled O over a Philadelphia coin is the classic alteration. Certified attribution from PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, removes the doubt above the lowest grades. Most known survivors fall in the Good through Fine range, with VF and XF coins less common, AU coins genuinely scarce, and Mint State examples rare.

For a collector, the 1839-O No Drapery is the workhorse second-year New Orleans Seated dime, considerably more accessible than the 1838-O Key and meaningfully more available than the Reverse of 1838 variety from the same year. It belongs in any date-and-mint Seated dime set and frequently fills the New Orleans Stars No Drapery type slot for buyers who want a single representative branch issue. Acquisition strategy favors problem-free original surfaces in Fine or VF over high-grade coins with the typical strike-weakness pattern; an honest VF often outranks a brightened XF on long-term collector value. The Regular classification on the site reflects that market reality.
