About this coinHistory

Carson City struck 7,700,000 dimes in 1877, the second-largest CC dime mintage of the entire branch run and a figure that placed the western branch within shouting distance of the 7.31 million Philadelphia delivery for the same year. The coin is a Legend, No Arrows issue under the 2.50-gram weight standard set by the Coinage Act of February 12, 1873. The 1877-CC arrived in the second-to-last year of Carson City dime production, with only the 200,000-piece 1878-CC remaining before the branch closed out its dime program entirely. The high mintage reads against the typical Carson City narrative of scarcity, but the year reflected the western silver-coin demand cycle reaching full capacity rather than any contraction; the branch was running its dime press at the same scale as Philadelphia for two consecutive years.

Strike quality on the issue is generally good for Carson City, with full shield rivets and respectable wreath leaves on most well-preserved examples. The characteristic CC softness on the ribbon bow and lower drapery folds still appears, particularly on late-die-state coins, and head detail can run weak when working dies passed their prime. Most survivors fall in Very Good through Extremely Fine, where the coin did its working life through the late 1870s and 1880s before being pulled by the Treasury silver recall programs of later decades. About Uncirculated examples are reasonably available given the mintage base, and Mint State pieces exist in usable numbers without becoming common above MS-63 with clean fields. Authentication for the issue starts at the 2.50-gram weight on a 90-percent-silver planchet, the 17.9-millimeter reeded edge, and verification of the CC mintmark seated inside the wreath. Counterfeit risk on Carson City dimes generally remains moderate, with altered-mintmark pieces (CC stamped over a doctored Philadelphia reverse) the principal concern; PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, attribution carries real weight on any premium-grade purchase.

For collectors, the 1877-CC is the second-most-accessible Carson City dime after the 1876-CC and the easier of the two final-stretch CC dimes given the 1878-CC's much smaller mintage. Circulated examples through Extremely Fine surface at modest CC-mint premiums over Philadelphia type pricing, and certified Mint State pieces remain reachable for set collectors willing to wait.
